MI SCHOOL THERAPIST

Three Tiers of Support

MTSS stands for multi-tiered system of support. When was MTSS first introduced? The Elementary and Secondary Education/Every Student Succeeds Act (ESEA/ESSA), signed into federal law in December 2015, called for a “for a multi-tier system of supports for literacy services.”

MI SCHOOL THERAPIST leverages this widely known and pedagogically successful framework to address mental health concerns among school-aged children. Implementing and utilizing the MTSS framework for mental health provides a systematic method of early identification and intervention that can help students learn about common concerns that they possibly face daily. As such, MTSS uses three tiers of support to assist all students at various levels.

Psychoeducation (Tier 1) - Universal or Primary Program
Majority of students (75-90%)

As the largest tier, and the foundation for the entire framework, MI SCHOOL THERAPIST's Tier 1 program called "Pyschoeducation" educates the entire student body with core education and basic mental health interventions. This structure helps to build positive relationships between clinicians and students. It includes proactive behavioral management strategies aimed at normalizing mental health challenges and understanding why they occur. Students who do not respond to this intervention may move into Tier 2.
